otterOtter Carnivorous and aquatic mammal belonging to the weasel family, found on all continents except Australia. The slender body of the otter of North America is about three and a half to four half feet long (smaller in the female) including the long tail. It has a flattened head and, its legs are short, and its hind feet are webbed.

Being an agile swimmer, it hunts in streams and lakes for crawfish, along the banks of which it makes its burrow. Its diet also consists of small mammals and birds.

The Otter is a playful animal; groups have been seen playing " follow the leader, " sliding down mud banks, or tobogganing in the snow. Its fur is thick and brown and a soft under coat with underlying glossy guard hairs.

The sea otter, found in and near kelp beds in the North Pacific, is a larger heavier animal of the same family which habitually swims on its back. While in this position it carries its catch and eats some its meals of abalone, crab, and sea urchin. Relentless hunting of this defenseless animal for its beautiful fur nearly exterminated it.
